Human Semen Analysis
From the WHO Manual to the Clinical Management of Infertile Men
Editors: Dr. Rupin Shah (India), Prof. Hyun Jun Park (South Korea), and Ashok Agarwal (USA)
Male infertility contributes to about 50% of infertility cases, an important public health problem affecting around 15% of couples worldwide. While semen analysis serves as the cornerstone of evaluation, the widely referenced World Health Organization (WHO) laboratory manual primarily provides detailed testing descriptions but lacks sufficient clinical context. This textbook bridges the gap between the laboratory manual and the clinician. It successfully moves male fertility from a largely laboratory-based definition into the realm of clinical diagnosis by explaining test indications, clinical utilities, results interpretations, and decision algorithms to guide appropriate clinical actions.
The book begins with a historical view of the WHO manual, tracing its evolution from the first to the sixth edition. The authors then provide a comprehensive discussion on the different aspects of human semen analysis in clinical practice. Topics include basic semen examinations such as macroscopic parameters, sperm concentration, motility, vitality, morphology, and the evaluation of leukocytospermia. It also explores extended and advanced diagnostic modalities, detailing evidence-based approaches to sperm DNA fragmentation, genetic screening for sperm aneuploidy via FISH, seminal oxidative stress, and computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA). At the end, the book discusses highly specialized procedures and future directions, including sperm preparation techniques for artificial reproductive technology (ART), sperm banking, and anticipated developments for the 7th edition.
Key highlights:
- 19 chapters authored by 35 contributors from 20 countries. Number of pages, 383.
- Comprehensive coverage utilizing a consistent chapter format that integrates laboratory actions, clinician responses, and current controversies across all domains of semen analysis.
- An indispensable resource combining foundational laboratory testing concepts, advanced diagnostic insights, and clinical decision algorithms for clinicians, medical laboratory technologists, embryologists, and researchers.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Male Sexual Dysfunction - Controversies, Advances and Future Developments.
Editors: Dr. Rupin Shah (India), Prof. Hyun Jun Park (South Korea), and Ashok Agarwal (USA)
Male sexual dysfunction (MSD) encompasses a variety of conditions that impair sexual function in men, potentially occurring at any stage of the sexual response cycle—desire, arousal, or orgasm. This highly prevalent condition is caused by diverse, multifactorial etiologies and significantly influences a man's psychological well-being, interpersonal relationships, and overall quality of life. Although MSD can present complex clinical challenges, contemporary care offers a wide range of treatment options. These include oral and injectable pharmacotherapies, device-based interventions, surgical reconstruction, psychosexual support, and newer regenerative modalities such as low-intensity shockwave therapy and platelet-rich plasma injections.
The book begins with an introduction to MSD, including its foundational anatomy, physiology, and epidemiology. The authors then provide a comprehensive discussion on the different aspects of MSD. Topics include modern diagnostic algorithms and evidence-based treatments for erectile dysfunction, Peyronie's disease, premature ejaculation, priapism, testosterone deficiency syndrome, and sexual pain. It also explores the psychological, emotional, and relational dimensions of this condition in men and their partners, which are often overlooked in clinical texts. At the end, the book discusses highly specialized and emerging fields, including post-orgasmic illness syndrome (POIS), anhedonia, advances in regenerative therapies, and the vital intersection of oncosexology and oncofertility.
Key highlights:
- 15 chapters authored by 24 contributors from 12 countries. Number of pages, 244.
- Comprehensive coverage integrating the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment across all domains of male sexual dysfunction.
- An evidence-based resource combining foundational concepts, updated epidemiologic insights, and comparative analyses of therapeutic modalities for clinicians and researchers.

Non-Obstructive Azoospermia - A Comprehensive Guide to Causes, Diagnosis, and Treatment.
Editors: Prof. Wael Zohdy, Dr. Murat Gül, Dr. Rupin Shah, Prof. Ashok Agarwal
Non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) is characterized by the absence of sperm in the ejaculate due to a failure of the testes to produce sperm and is the cause of infertility in about 1% of adult men. This condition can result from various factors, including genetic abnormalities, hormonal imbalances, and environmental factors. Although NOA can make it difficult for men to conceive a child, there are treatment options available. These include hormonal therapy, surgical procedures, and assisted reproductive techniques such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
The book begins with an introduction to NOA, including its definition, diagnosis, and epidemiology. The authors then provide a comprehensive discussion on the different aspects of NOA. Topics include endocrine aberrations, the genetic spectrum of NOA, primary and secondary hypogonadism, fertility restoration, surgical approaches for sperm retrieval, and much more. It also explores the psychological and emotional impact of this condition on men and their partners. At the end, the book discusses the most recent international guidelines on NOA, as well as what the future holds for NOA, including experimental therapies, advancements in ART, and new research.
